About Gifted & Talented Student Program

At Asquith Boys High School we consistently ensure that students with special gifts and talents are provided with opportunities to achieve to their highest potential.

Each faculty meets its subject specific requirements with this overall goal in mind for all classes from years 7 to 12.

Our school has an established tradition of an enrichment class for appropriate students in Year 7. This class is provided with a broader range of assessment tasks than the other Year 7 classes. Students are not accelerated through their work, but rather, have the opportunity to study in more depth in each of their subject areas.

In 2005, the Year 7 enrichment class were the focus of our whole school “Success” program, conducted across all Key Learning Areas and modelled on similar programs that had been successfully conducted in
schools across New South Wales.

Our “Success” project formed part of the Northern Sydney Region Quality Teaching Project. As such, each teacher taught their subject so that the Quality Teaching dimensions of intellectual depth, learning environment and significance were reflected in the teaching strategies they employed. The project was a great “success”, with the boys experiencing a wealth of learning opportunities through which they were well and truly extended.

Our involvement with the Northern Sydney Region Quality Teaching Project has continued into 2006, with similar enrichment activities being offered to classes in Years 7 and 8 across all Key Learning Areas.

During the second semester of 2006, all students in Year 7 will be presented with further enrichment opportunities in the form of a Personal Interest Project. This is a new initiative at our school, to be conducted in Term 4 with the assistance of Year 10 Peer Support Leaders and expert teachers in the fields of Creative Arts, Computing and Industrial Arts.

The Year 7 Personal Interest Projects will build upon our tradition of extending gifted and talented students as we seek to unlock the learning potential of each individual. Teachers will be particularly keen to put into practice the implications of our school’s involvement with the Australian Schools Network’s “Habits of Mind” initiative, targeting the 16 “habits of mind” which lead to effective learning.

In Years 9 and 10, this emphasis on individual student interest is continued .The boys are given the opportunity to expand the amount of time they wish to spend in areas of personal interest through the broad range of elective subjects offered across the range of Key Learning Areas.

In Years 11 and 12, our school has an established and successful tradition of offering Extension Courses in English, Mathematics and History. These courses are taught by our most experienced senior teachers.
