Silver - Duke of Edinburgh Expedition

Otford to Bundeena

We embarked on a 3 day journey, which would involve meeting at Hornsby railway station at 8am, travelling on trains to Otford via central then walking Otford to Bundeena via the coast track which alone was a distance of 27 km, then catch a ferry from Bundeena to Cronulla and return to Hornsby by train via central.

The first day stated with a group of 7 eager students meeting two teachers at Hornsby station, which eventually turned into the adventure that was expected. As soon as we stepped off the train we were presented with our first climb of the trip that soon passed and we started walking on the coast track that involved some great scenery. After 6 or 7 km we arrived at our campsite north Era. We got to the campsite ahead off schedule that gave us plenty of time to set up and have a look around.

The next morning we crawled out of our tents to be met by the sun that had already risen. We packed up and had breakfast and left the campsite at about 8:30am. Again we started with a hill that was soon overcome as we reached the top and we all looked towards the track we would soon be walking on. We continued until the terrain changed to flatter trails along a cliff we were soon greeted with a waterfall that would provide us with a lunch stop. After lunch we continued to walk to our campsite Wattamolla, we arrived at the camp at about 2:30 and quickly set up our tents so we could go down to the lagoon and have a swim. When we got back we decided to prepare dinner and soon after head off to our tents.

On the third day we beat the sun up and it supplied us with some great photo‘s. We left Wattamolla at about 8am on target to get to Bundeena early, as we were ahead of schedule we detoured via a place called deer pool. We left deer pool and found the track again. As we continued we had lunch, shortly after we were faced with our last challenge of the trip, to navigate ourselves out to Bundeena without getting lost. This was successful for most of us. The others were found a short time later.

The trip was over varied terrain and tracks these included woodlands, rainforest and grasslands. The tracks we walked on varied between dirt tracks, rock platforms and metal grates. The conditions were good, except for the exposed parts where it got a bit windy.
