Schools Tree Day

On Friday 31st July our school took part in Schools Tree Day with a team of 9 boys from Years 8 – 10 (mostly SRC) along with Mr Murphy and Mr Arblaster working hard to plant 150 native plants.
Earlier in the year the boys of the SRC had done a great job of preparing a large garden bed of mulch approximately 50 metres long and 4 metres wide along the Jersey St fence line at the northern end of the school. Four months later the mulch has broken down nicely to create a perfect environment for native plants.  The 150 plants are only half of what we will eventually plant and we hope to complete the rest of the job later this term.
The plants were supplied through the generosity of the Hornsby Shire Council Nursery at Pennant Hills. We really appreciate their support in this project, particularly nurseryman Ross Rapmund, who propagated the plants from seeds. Ross has visited the school twice in the last year to give us advice on how to create sustainable gardens in keeping with the local natural environment.
Because the trees, shrubs and grasses are native to the local area, they have the best possible chance of long term survival without a minimum of ongoing maintenance. They also help to return at least part of the school grounds to their natural state before European settlement. If you go for a bush walk anywhere in the surrounding area you will see the same species occurring. Below is a list of the species and number of each we planted on Friday.
Banksia serrata, 15; Acacia floribunda, 15; Grevillea linearifolia, 10; Pultenaea flexilis, 10; Prostanthera scutteleriodes, 10; Indigofera australis, 15; Pittosporum revolutum, 15; Callistemon species, 10; Isotoma axillaris, 10; Lomandra longifolia, 10; Themeda australis, 10; Dianella caerulea, 10; Geranium homeanum, 10

Thanks to Mr Murphy and all the boys involved on the day who included Adam Shields, Josh Corcoran, Andrew Laird (Yr 10), Marcus Limbert, Max Sharkey (Yr 9), Michael Fuary, Mitchell Koellner, Eden Percival and Josh Gemmell (Yr 8)
Also, our thanks to Mr Sonter who helped with supplying equipment and obtaining the mulch for us.
