About Code of Conduct

STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT

Asquith Boys High School has a proud tradition of academic, cultural and sporting achievements. We look forward to your contribution as a member of our school community.

As a student of Asquith Boys High School, you have certain rights and responsibilities. A high standard of behaviour and cooperation is expected at all times. Students must follow instructions given by any member of staff anywhere in the school. Being cooperative and polite, joining in all school activities and participating in a positive fashion will help a student get the most out of their years at school.

The emphasis in the Code of Conduct is on positive behaviour; if, however, students break this Code of Conduct, consequences may follow. Possible consequences are listed at the end of this Code of Conduct.

You have the responsibility to:

1. Show courtesy to and respect for others

· Follow the instructions of all staff, whether they are a permanent or relief teacher.
· Address all teachers and students politely; swearing at or abuse of teachers will not be tolerated.
· Swearing in the presence of others is offensive, and as such, is not acceptable.
· Treat all people with the respect that they deserve, regardless of colour, ethnic origin, religion or disability.
· Treat people working in the canteen with respect; correct canteen behaviour results in speedier service.
· Follow the instructions of Prefects from both Asquith Boys and Asquith Girls High Schools.

2. Act in a way that does not endanger or threaten others
· Do not do anything that might cause injury to others.
· Do not fight or cause fights with such behaviour as teasing, bullying, taunting, victimisation or name calling.
· Remember the importance of safety in the school; physical activities such as running and ball games should
be reserved for the appropriate places in the school.
· Leave all dangerous items at home.
· There is no place in the school for illegal drugs and they will not be tolerated. Bringing drugs (except those
prescribed to a particular student for his use only) or any form of
weapon to school will result in suspension
  and police involvement.
· Cigarettes are not to be brought to school. Smoking is not permitted on school premises at any time.
· Aerosol cans are not permitted at school as they can pose a threat to safety. Rollon deodorants can be used
  if required.
· Skateboards and scooters must not be brought to school at any time or for any reason; they can pose a threat to the safety of the rider and are not needed.
· Use the bins provided for waste. Litter is not only visually offensive, but causes environmental damage and threatens health and safety by attracting vermin.

3. Respect the personal belongings and property of others
· Vandalism and graffiti damage property; do not cause damage to public or private property.
· Do not steal property and be sure to hand in property that you find that is not yours.
· Clearly label your belongings to help protect your own property.
· Leave all valuables at home unless it is essential that they be brought to school.
· Look after the school; take care of the buildings, furniture, books and grounds and all the property for which
the community and your parents pay. Keep everything clean and tidy.
· Respect the property of our neighbours; do not do anything to harm or litter peoples' property that you pass
  as you come to school.
· Mobile phones may be brought to school if necessary. They must be switched off at all times when in class
or participating in a school activity. Responsibility for the security of
a mobile phone rests with the owner of
the phone, not with the school.

4. Come prepared to work and with all appropriate equipment and respect the desire of others to learn without
    disruption
· Do all work required of you, and spend time studying so that you make the most of your educational
  opportunities.
· Join in school activities to get the most out of your years at school.
· Use your timetable to ensure that you bring all the equipment that you need for the day's work.
· Make up your mind to pay attention in class, and do not disrupt the learning of others.
· Be in the right place at the right time; be prompt to lessons and wait quietly for teachers before entering the
  room.
· Eat at times and in places set aside for that purpose.
· Never miss school without a proper excuse and written explanation from your parent or caregiver.
· Arrive at school on time and attend all classes during the day.

5. Take pride in your personal appearance
 · Wear the uniform that has been chosen by the school community.
· Make sure that the uniform is worn correctly at all times.
· Be wellgroomed and observe accepted standards of social behaviour and personal hygiene.

6. Behave in a way that brings credit on the school
· Respect visitors to the school.
· Behave in an acceptable way at all times when outside the school grounds.
· Behave in a safe manner on public transport.
· Consider other people when you are outside the school; you have rights, but so does everybody else. Your
rights must not spoil the enjoyment of other people.
· Smoking in school uniform degrades yourself and the school, and is detrimental to your health; it is therefore
  unacceptable.
· Drive safely, taking no risks that may affect the health and safety of anyone.
· Show courtesy on public transport, and give up your seat to a farepaying passenger.

7. Respect the truth and take responsibility for your mistakes
· Be honest in all situations; do not do anything to harm another person by your lies.
· All students make mistakes from time to time; take responsibility for your mistakes, do whatever has to be
done to fix things up and move on.

Consequences for the breach of this Code of Conduct may include any or all of the following:
· Demerit points.
· Placement on the No – Go list, with the associated loss of privileges.
· Withdrawal of privileges, including school excursions, participation in Grade Sport, and / or representation of
the school in sporting or other school teams and activities for a period of time
deemed to be appropriate by
  the school.
· Withdrawal of commission as a Prefect or Student Representative Councillor.
· After school detention.
· Isolation desk / Planning Room.
· Formal caution.
· Suspension.
· Expulsion from the school or from the system.
· Such other consequences that are deemed appropriate by the school to the breach of the Code.
