About Music
Music
Learning a musical instrument can help your son improve his academic performance. This is confirmed by research in the USA that found that children who learned a musical instrument scored significantly higher in standardized literacy and numeracy tests than those who did not. Musical activities provide important learning experiences which help to develop physical coordination, timing, memory, visual, aural and language skills as well as self discipline, mental concentration and self confidence.
Music at Asquith is very diverse - from developing the basic concepts in Year 7; exploring guitar/keyboard electives in Year 8; small ensemble work in Years 9/10 to highly individualised programs in Music 1,2 and Extension in years 11/12. Elective Music students regularly attend concerts and performances such as Encore, ArtsNorth, AIM and Meet The Music as part of their musical development. Students are encouraged to develop their musical abilities for inclusion in the annual Variety show, held each year in Term 2. Variety 2008 included a wide range of material from Jazz to Rock, Classic to African, Country to Pop and everything in between.
One of Asquith’s most successful and loved musical duos is Zoumpee and PP's Country Hour with their foot stompin’ country tunes so loved by all at any performance. A local offshoot is the Sixes & Sevens band formed by Mr. Thomsett constructed of teachers, students and old boys which continues to play rock tunes of the sixties, seventies and beyond.
Asquith Boys High School has a wonderful musical culture centred on performance and composition; from instrument projects in Yr 7 (refer photo gallery) to Band 6 performers at the 2007 HSC examination. In 2005 The Cancellation participated in Youthrock at Bankstown competing against 48 other bands and coming 5th in the State with their original quirky, contemporary compositions.
Our Stage Band master, Iain Howick, works regularly with patient dedication, developing the performing skills of the Stage Band, preparing them for participation at Festivals and events all around Sydney and the local community. Regular performances on school assemblies and at local primary schools helps to develop their performing skills. Band Scholarships are offered to Year 7 and Year 11 musicians and Music Scholarships are offered to Year 11/12. |
